Personal relationships can come with important legal rights and responsibilities. This course helps you understand how New Zealand law applies to marriage, civil unions and de facto relationships — both when relationships begin and when they end. 

 

What you'll learn 

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to: 

  • Explain key legal requirements for marriage and civil unions, including consent, freedom of choice and restrictions 
  • Describe what a de facto relationship means in law 
  • Understand legal rights and responsibilities relating to property and children 
  • Describe separation, dissolution and the role of the Family Court 
  • Explain what can happen to property, inheritance, child support, and care and contact with children when a relationship ends 

This course gives you a clearer understanding of the legal side of relationships – knowledge that can make real-life situations easier to understand.
